a Mother in Search of the Unbearable Lightness of Being

Hong Kong with a Toddler

Olive’s +852 trip at 13.5 months small

Travel period: 28 Nov to 06 Dec 2015

Weather: Autumn with temperatures between 20°c to 25°c. Yes to air-con everywhere!

Stay: Royal Park Hotel, Shatin, New Territories. Close enough to Kowloon but definitely more convenient to stay in the Kowloon or Hong Kong Island districts.

Eat: Was considering cooking for Olive using an electric lunch box but ended up eating out  mostly. Plenty of food options though. Food pouches, snacks, fruits readily available in supermarkets in the malls. Restaurants, at least those that we wanted to dine in, aren’t the most kid-friendly i.e. no highchairs, no kids menu, definitely no kids play area, so be prepared to eat with a kid on your lap. Otherwise, research on family friendly restaurants if you are able to forgo your not so regular bowl of wonton or beef noodles, scrambled eggs with toast and milk pudding in your regular local eateries.

Moving around: Hong Kong is not stroller friendly so we used a baby carrier instead. Uneven pavements, narrow walkways, crowds, and not easy locating elevators in the MTR station. Child seats are not required in taxis.

28.11.15 Sat Day 1: Arrived and checked in. Dinner with Granduncle Joseph and Yiyi Dawn.

With 姑姑 in +852 airport.

29.11.15 Sun Day 2: Shatin Central Park and stroll along Shing Mun River. Yum cha, street food, Australia Dairy Company 澳洲牛奶公司 at Jordan. Visit and dinner with relatives.

Strolling along the river and looking for fishes.

Weeee! So much fun!

Olive’s first cable car ride. She stretched her hand out of the window to feel the wind, eyes fixated on the scenic view of Hong Kong. Living life and loving it!

Holding her own little concert on the streets of old Hong Kong.

How about a round of applause for me?

03.12.15 Thu Day 6: Walking around Tsim Sha Tsui (TST) and more shopping in Harbour City.

04.12.15 Fri Day 7: Hong Kong Disneyland

First Disneyland experience! Hip hip hurray!

05.12.15 Sat Day 8: Rode the Star Ferry. Explored TST and Central. Checked out Sky100 instead of the Peak due to bad weather.

Olive’s first ferry ride.

06.12.15 Sun Day 9: Morning walk at Shatin Central Park again before we flew back to +62.

What we missed: The Peak, Museums (Science Museum / Museum of History), Lantau Island (Big Buddha, Po Lin Monastery, Ngong Ping village etc.) via Ngong Ping 360, UNESCO Geoparks, Central Mid-levels escalators, Avenue of Stars…

Hong Kong is probably one of the countries, like a 2nd or 3rd home, where we really don’t feel the need to do a lot of exploring because 1. Oska was born in Hong Kong, grew up there and we visit often enough, 2. visiting relatives and eating are the main priorities there, 3. we often get lured in to the shopping malls. But with Olive, everywhere is new again so hopefully we get to see more of Hong Kong the next time we are there.
